My favorite film director ever, goes to where there is no going farther south. After collaborating with a diver who shared him footage from Antarctica (he used it in The Wild Blue Yonder [2005]), he was invited and then sponsored by the National Science Foundation to go to Antartica. He came up with this film. What kind of people does he meet? People of some kind. Big time dreamers and searchers. One of them is looking for neutrinos. Divers prepare in silence, “like priests for mass” says Herzog, and scientists play blues with electric guitars on their lab’s rooftop. The landscape is very much “like a future space colony would look like”. One penguin develops the searcher’s trait to the extreme, there is an active volcano that you can’t give your back to, and a sturgeon found long dead but somewhat conserved in the ice.

The idea that the human species is doomed, that we will all die and disappear is present here. An idea to big and sad to comprehend. But still, much like the dinosaurs before us maybe we will not be a line that continues to evolve. Is it possible that a human being will one day be found by another completely different species just like the sturgeon is found by men in this film? Is that so unbelievable? Watch Jung’s best friend comment about this almost at the end of Matter of Heart. Also, pay special attention to the dark bubbles of air merge into one bellow the sheet of ice, just like a cell ingesting its surroundings and continue to wander and witness the mysteries of existence.
